Rachel Biddulph is a landscape artist based on the Gower Peninsula, South Wales. She works both en plein air and from her studio in Langland. Her expressive and atmospheric oil paintings emerge from a deep emotional response to the coastline and its ever-changing weather, light and mood; the sudden darkness before a storm breaks, the shifting quality of light through rain, distant squalls trailing across open water, and the sharp shafts of light piercing heavy cloud, catching and illuminating the surface of the water. Working prominently in oil and cold wax, Rachel’s paintings are textured and her process is energetic and intuitive, responding to the physicality of paint, its surprises and possibilities—the unpredictability echoing the nature of the weather and coastline itself.
